About us

A community music school built around living tradition

Slavų tradicinės muzikos mokykla is an officially registered Lithuanian non-profit organization (Registration Code: 124627254) based in Šiauliai. Dedicated to the preservation, education and dissemination of traditional folk music, our school serves as a vibrant cultural centre. We bring together children, youth, researchers and music enthusiasts to learn traditional instruments, vocal techniques and historical repertoire, fostering social integration, artistic education and mutual cultural respect across diverse communities in Lithuania.

Our teaching happens in small groups, in ordinary rooms, with instruments passed from hand to hand. Alongside lessons we record older singers, transcribe repertoire, and invite families and neighbours to hear what the students have learned. Everything we do is non-commercial and open to the public.

Our mission

To safeguard, teach and celebrate traditional Slavic folk music, providing accessible arts education, youth workshops and community performance platforms that enrich Lithuania's multicultural heritage.

Our vision

An inclusive, culturally rich society where traditional music is recognised as a vital living art form that connects generations, promotes community dialogue and fosters creative expression for all.

Who we serve

  • Children and youth — beginners learning voice, strings and percussion in a supportive group setting.
  • Families and neighbours — audiences and volunteers at our open rehearsals, seasonal concerts and heritage days.
  • Teachers and researchers — colleagues who use our transcriptions, recordings and repertoire notes in their own work.
  • Cultural partners — schools, libraries, community centres and ensembles in Šiauliai and across Lithuania.
